20 years of Doing the Work
A Brief recap of GEorge’s time in Denton
2005 – Putting Down Roots: Moved to Denton as a UNT dance major, instantly falling in love with the city’s trees, arts, and local flare.
2007-2013 – Building from Scratch: Frustrated by a lack of artistic opportunity, George joined five other artists to co-found Sundown Collaborative Theatre. Starting with zero budget and rehearsing in garages and basements, George eventually served as Co-Artistic Director. Today, the company is in its 18th season at the Golden Triangle Mall, a testament to the enduring institutions George has helped build.
2015-2020 – Small Business & Community Leadership: After over a decade and a half in the service industry, George earned an opportunity to become the owner of Wine Squared, a local wine bar. During this time, he deepened his community service by joining the Denton Mainstreet Association Board and Friends With Benefits- Denton to create events for the community to enjoy downtown, and raise funds for local nonprofits.
2019 – Advocacy in Action: George ran for City Council District 1, losing by just 98 votes, but refused to stop working. That same year, they were invited to join the PRIDENTON Board to launch the first-ever downtown Pride Parade. They also worked alongside organizers to clear brush and dig trenches to fight for the Green Tree Estates community's access to clean water.
2020-2024 – Policy, Preservation & The Pivot: While returning to school for Social Work, George served a 6-year term on the Denton Parks, Recreation, and Beautification Board (serving as Chair for the last 3 years). They helped update 25-year-old policies to ensure developers pay their fair share for green spaces and collaborated with Equality Texas to help pass the comprehensive Non-Discrimination Ordinance (NDO).
2024-Present – Housing, Healthcare & Results: Now President of the Denton Affordable Housing Corporation (DAHC) Board and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, George oversees housing and supportive services for vulnerable residents. They organized a drive delivering 1,600 winter coats to students and founded Radiant Counseling & Wellness Collective to provide affordable, affirming mental health care to the community.
Bringing the Heart of a Social Worker to City Hall
George isn't in it for the title. They are a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Their professional background means they are trained in active listening, coalition building, and data-driven problem solving. Whether they are was helping 1,000+ families in public schools or managing supportive services for the unhoused, George knows how to navigate complex bureaucracies to get results for people.
Denton Parks, Recreation, and Beautification Board: 6 years of service (3 as Chair), leading the charge to increase developer fees to protect our green space.
Affordable Housing: Current President of the Denton Affordable Housing Corporation (DAHC), overseeing 95+ units and breaking ground on 84 units of Permanent Supportive Housing.
Community Advocacy: Board member for PRIDENTON (helping launch the first downtown Pride parade) and Friends With Benefits Denton.
Street-Level Service: Personally helped dig water lines for the Green Tree Estates community to ensure they had access to clean water.
Small Business Advocacy: Served on the Board of the Denton Main Street Association, where they worked to promote and preserve the vibrant, independent business culture of the downtown Square. This role allowed them to advocate for the "legacy shops" that give Denton its unique character and ensure they have a voice in city planning.
Proven Leadership. Real Results.
Life in liL’ d
George lives and works in Denton with their husband Clint, and two sweet dogs, Prudence Janeway and Phoebe Ro (Charmed and Star Trek, anyone?). Clint is in his 17 year as a public school choir teacher. When George isn’t in an event planning meeting, advocating at City Hall, or seeing clients; you can find them practicing yoga at Bloom, watching movies at Alamo Drafthouse, trying delicious local food, and enjoying the beautiful Denton parks and outdoors.
A message from george:
The Work Continues
Dear Neighbor,
Denton is more than just where I live. It’s the place that gave me a foundation of community and a real sense of home. Over the last 20 years, I’ve seen our city grow and change. I’ve also seen how a divided leadership can stand in the way of the progress we all deserve.
I’m running for City Council At-Large Place 5 because I believe Denton is at its best when we are listening to one another instead of arguing. My philosophy for this campaign, and for my service when I’m elected to City Council, is simple: Unity, Compassion, and Action.
As a licensed clinician, my career is built on the promise of active listening and finding a pathway forward, even when the conversations are difficult. I’m not here to represent a single faction; I’m here to amplify the voices of all my neighbors. From the small business owners on the Square to the families struggling to keep up with rising costs.
I invite you to be a part of this conversation. Whether you have a specific policy idea, a concern about our infrastructure, or just want to know more about my vision for a thriving Denton, my door is always open.
Together, let’s stop the division and start doing the work that makes our community stronger.
In Service,
George Ferrie, LCSW (They/Them)
Candidate for Denton City Council, At-Large Place 5
